1940s Movie Press Book
I am buying movie press books. Press books were magazine format and usually came in sizes larger than regular magazines you bought in stores. Pressbooks were released by the movie studios only to the owners of movie theaters. They contained articles on how the theater owner could promote the movie in his town. They contained samples of poster and other promo artwork the theater owner could order to decorate his movie theater with.
1960s Movie Press Kit
In the 1960s the traditional movie pressbook was replaced with a press kit which served the same purpose of helping movie theater owners promote the movie they were showing. Press kits came in a slick cardboard folder and contained publicity photos of the movie stars and articles with promotional ideas for the theater owners.
1950s Movie Publicity Photo
Movie publicity photos came in the standard size of about 8″ x 10″ although different larger sizes were also used. At the bottom was printed information about the releasing movie studios and copyright year. Sometimes an additional information sheet about the movie was glued or taped to the back of the photo.
1960s Movie Tie-In Paperback Books
In addition to all the other ways of promoting movies it was quite common for book publishers to release a paperback book “novelization” of the movie to help promote the movie. The front and back covers had nice photos or art from the movie posters. Sometimes there were photos on slick paper inside the book.
I Am Buying Twilight Zone & Other TV Photos
The photos I am buying from the TV shows listed below and maybe similar science fiction / fantasy shows are the only photos I am looking for. My top priority are the TV series written by Rod Serling, the 1960s era The Twilight Zone and the 1970s era Night Gallery.
My next priority is the 1960s era The Outer Limits. I also want any photos from Science Fiction Theater, Alfred Hitchock Presents, Thriller, The Invaders and Batman. I also want photos from Betwitched with Elizabeth Montgomery and The Avengers and The Green Hornet.
Lastly, I want any of the Irwin Allen produced sci-fi shows like Lost In Space, The Time Tunnel, Land Of The Giants, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
Publicity photos were issued by the television networks like CBS, NBC and ABC or advertising agencies in two sizes, usually 5″ x 7″ and sometimes 8″ x 10″ and in rare cases there are larger sizes printed on heavy cardboard. I will pay more for the larger sizes.
Network or advertising agency photos came with a “snipe” or information sheet attached by glue. A sample of a snipe is seen on the Twilight Zone photo at top left. Sometimes instead of an attached snipe, the photo would have typed or printed information on the bottom margin (see the Time Tunnel photo below).
To avoid buying modern day reprints I only want the photos with the snipes or printed information. I will consider buying photos that lack these but you must have some way of verifying the photos come from the relevant time period and are not modern reprints.
